G. Love & Special Sauce
A Festival of Love and Music
Interview by JOURny Magazine
As the annual Outermost Roots and Blues Festival approaches, excitement fills the air in Orleans, Massachusetts. G. Love and Special Sauce, the beloved trio known for their unique blend of hip-hop, blues, funk, and soul, are set to headline the event. This festival is more than just a concert; it is a celebration of community, music, and the spirit of collaboration that G. Love had dreamed of for years.
The festival has become a labor of love for G. and his wife Kelsey. Together they have worked tirelessly to bring together artists from around the world, drawing on G. Love's extensive network from his 30-year touring career.
This year is particularly special, as G. Love is also unveiling his new album, Ode to R.L., set to be released in November. The album is a heartfelt tribute to the late R.L. Boyce, a legendary figure in the Hill Country blues scene. G. Love had recorded with Boyce during the pandemic, a time that had forced many musicians off the road. It was during those sessions that a bond was forged, leading to the creation of the album that would honor Boyce’s legacy.
The festival has become a canvas of sound and color, each performance highlighting the beauty of collaboration. G’s emphasis with the festival is a celebration of the community that has supported him and his music over the years. It’s about bringing people together, sharing joy, and creating lasting memories, where music, art, and love all converge in a beautiful celebration of life.
Most of the stage banners and artwork seen at the festival are all created by G. himself, showcasing his graffiti skills. His art has taken its own course and has been tremendously successful. This past year he had his first museum show at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. His paintings feature multiple styles of writing the word ‘love’ in repetition, almost as a mantra. “In my music and my visual art, I’ve realized that my mission in life is to spread love, happiness and inspiration. By repeating the word love over and over again on canvas I put forth more love into the universe and that’s what I’m talking about.”
With each song, G. Love also reminds us of the power of music to connect and uplift. The festival not only showcases his new album but also celebrates the artistic journey he has taken—one that is intertwines music and visual art, with love at its core!
In my music and my visual art, I’ve realized that my mission in life is to spread love, happiness and inspiration.
